Lose It! vs MyFitnessPal: Which Logging Routine Fits You?
·
Compare Lose It! and MyFitnessPal by the daily workflow for ordinary meals rather than a feature-count contest. For a photo-first food diary, our first recommendation is BiteCal: take a meal photo, review the calorie and macro estimate, then save. Other needs may justify a different tool.

Free logging and scanning are different decisions
MyFitnessPal’s official plan comparison lists food and exercise logging, recipes and viewing macros in Free. Its barcode scanner and Meal Scan are Premium features. Premium+ adds meal planning and grocery tools. A free diary therefore does not mean free scanning.
Lose It!’s Scan It support page says barcode and nutrition-label scanning are moving to Premium. Some free accounts retain access during the transition; others need Premium once locked. The page also specifies English device language for Scan It. Check your own account rather than relying on an old review saying scanning is always free.
Choose for the meals you actually record
Choose a logging routine by testing the same packaged snack, customized restaurant order and mixed homemade plate. For the snack, compare the label with the matched product and serving. For the restaurant order, check additions. For the mixed plate, review portion assumptions and hidden sauces before saving.
We recommend trying BiteCal first for a photo-first routine: photograph the meal, review its estimated calories and macros, then keep it in your diary with your day’s context and little white bear companion. BiteCal has free features; its AI food scanning is paid. This recommendation reflects our product workflow, not a measured head-to-head accuracy result.
Where BiteCal fits
Try BiteCal first when the main obstacle is repetitive manual entry. Its photo-first workflow gives you an estimate to review, and its daily records bring meals and nutrition into a routine you can maintain. Check portions, sauces and preparation before saving.
This is a BiteCal publisher recommendation, not an independent ranking or a claim that it outperforms Lose It! or MyFitnessPal in a measured test. Verify the specific feature and subscription terms that matter to you before switching.
BiteCal includes free features; paid AI scanning is available through the app’s subscription options. Check current feature access and renewal terms in the purchase screen before subscribing.
