Should You Weigh Food Raw or Cooked? A Practical Tracking Guide
·
Either raw or cooked weighing can work: the weight must match the database entry. Do not enter cooked grams against a dry or raw food record.
Match your weighing method
| Food | If weighed before cooking | If weighed after cooking |
|---|---|---|
| Rice or pasta | Dry entry | Cooked entry |
| Chicken or beef | Raw entry | Matching cooked cut and method |
| Beans or lentils | Dry entry | Cooked or drained entry |
| Mixed recipe | Sum raw ingredient entries | Divide recipe total by final yield |
The entry and the scale must describe the same food
Water changes food weight during cooking. Rice and pasta usually absorb water; meat often loses water and fat. A fixed raw-to-cooked multiplier is not reliable across recipes, cooking times and draining methods.
For batch cooking, record the ingredients once and divide by the finished edible yield. An illustrative 900 kcal rice batch weighing 750 g gives 300 kcal for a 250 g portion: 900 × 250 ÷ 750. Added oil belongs in the ingredient total; count each ingredient only once.

Common mismatches to fix
| Mistake | Better choice |
|---|---|
| Cooked rice grams with dry rice data | Select cooked rice |
| Bones included in meat weight | Use edible weight |
| Oil counted in recipe and again on plate | Count it once |
| One fixed cooking conversion | Measure your actual batch |
Frequently asked questions
Should I always weigh chicken raw?
Raw weighing is convenient when preparing your own meal. Cooked weighing also works with the matching cooked entry. Keep bones, skin and cooking method consistent.
Does cooking create more calories?
Water gain or loss changes calories per gram. Added oil adds energy; discarded fat or cooking liquid can remove some. Match the prepared food rather than assuming every change is water.
