High protein dinner: ingredients, a practical recipe and what changes the total

A protein-focused dinner can still contain legumes, vegetables and a carbohydrate side. The aim is a workable meal, not the largest possible meat portion. This guide uses a salmon, lentil and vegetable dinner to show the ingredients, preparation and serving decisions that make a useful estimate possible.

What the name does—and does not—tell you

The salmon species, cooked portion and sauce change the final estimate. A fish fillet photographed beside a large plate is not a reliable weight standard.

For this example, the ingredient list is cooked salmon, cooked lentils, roasted vegetables and lemon-herb dressing. That list is a recipe description rather than a calorie number. A reliable total needs the actual ingredient amounts, the food or product that matches each ingredient, and the amount you eat or drink. Start there instead of choosing the first similarly named result.

A kitchen example with actual quantities

For two example dinners, use 280 g cooked salmon, 250 g cooked lentils, 400 g vegetables and 20 g olive oil shared across cooking and dressing. Extra bread or potatoes can be added and logged if wanted.

These amounts are an original illustrative cooking suggestion. They are not a tested restaurant replica, a personalized meal plan or a certified nutrition panel. You can use the format while changing ingredients, but a changed recipe needs a changed record. The quantities also do not prove that one plate is the right size for every person.

Named reference ingredients: not a nutrition panel for the complete recipe

Prepare it in a repeatable order

Prepare lentils until tender and drain excess liquid. Roast or steam the vegetables, cook the salmon safely, then serve the lentils as a base with the fish on top. Measure the oil before dividing it between cooking and dressing.

Lentils absorb dressing, so a lemon-herb sauce can flavor the base without needing a thick layer on the fish. Leave a few vegetables crisp for contrast.

Build the nutrition total from the ingredients

Write down the protein food, starch or bread, vegetables and sauce before combining them. Use the product label for a branded item or an appropriate food reference for a plain ingredient. If you use a reference measured per 100 g, multiply its value by the edible grams used and divide by 100. Use the same portion multiplier for each nutrient you include.

Raw package weight and cooked fillet weight are different bases.

A raw ingredient amount needs a raw ingredient record, while a finished cooked amount needs a suitable cooked record. Water added or lost can change weight; that is a reason to keep the preparation basis consistent, rather than assigning the whole finished plate a number from one ingredient.

Three variations worth distinguishing

Choose tofu or chicken when salmon is unavailable and revise the entry to match.

Use a tomato-based bean side instead of lentils for a different flavor.

Add a starch according to appetite and the rest of your day; a dinner does not become more balanced simply by excluding it.

What a photograph can add

Photograph fish, lentils and sides before mixing. Note whether the fish weight is raw or cooked and include any oil-based dressing.

BiteCal can use a food photo as a starting point for calorie and macro estimates. Review the identified ingredients and portions before adding the meal to your day. An attractive picture is useful context, but it does not reveal every recipe detail or establish a laboratory measurement.

A useful final serving check

Skin, bones and discarded sauce affect what was actually eaten.

A protein target alone does not describe the entire dinner.

Decide whether the record describes the serving prepared, the serving offered or the serving actually consumed. Those can differ. A simple note about leftovers, a shared side or a later topping is more informative than a very precise number attached to the wrong amount.

Frequently asked question
