Avocado versus cucumber: calories, macros and portion trade-offs

فريق تحرير BiteCal · · قراءة: 4 دقائق

كيف نتحقق من المصادر

The named avocado and cucumber references contain 160 and 15 kcal per 100 g respectively. Compare equal weights first, then calculate the portions and additions you would actually eat.

What exactly is being compared?

For the numbers in this guide, avocado means “Avocados, raw, all commercial varieties” (USDA FoodData Central 171705). It contains 160 kcal per 100 g edible portion. Avocado contains a substantial amount of fat compared with many salad vegetables. A thin spread and half a large fruit can therefore represent different portions. Keeping that definition attached to the number prevents a plain ingredient from being mistaken for a prepared meal.

The second food is “Cucumber, with peel, raw,” rather than an unspecified cucumber dish. Preparation is part of the comparison: a raw ingredient, cooked grain, spread or complete meal is not automatically interchangeable with another food just because both appear in a calorie search.

Calories on an equal-weight basis

The comparison food is “Cucumber, with peel, raw” (FDC 168409), which contains 15 kcal per 100 g. At equal 75 g weights, the avocado reference supplies 120 kcal and cucumber supplies 11.3 kcal: a difference of 108.8 kcal. That is a calculation for these records, not a universal ranking of foods or an instruction to exchange equal portions.

The gap per 100 g is 145 kcal. Doubling both weighed amounts doubles that calculated gap; halving both halves it. This explains the table without claiming that either food has a fixed portion or that a lower-energy choice provides an identical eating experience.

Protein, carbohydrate, fat and fiber

The same 100 g reference provides 2 g protein, 8.5 g total carbohydrate, 14.7 g fat and 6.7 g fiber. For the illustrated 75 g portion, those amounts become 1.5 g protein, 6.4 g carbohydrate, 11 g fat and 5 g fiber. Calories and individual nutrients describe different parts of the food, so keep all of them on the same portion basis when reading the table.

For cucumber, the same 100 g record reports 0.7 g protein, 3.6 g carbohydrate, 0.1 g fat, 0.5 g fiber. Read those values as a profile rather than a single score. The combination you want depends on the rest of the meal and any personal nutrition requirements.

Why the realistic portion matters

A weighed 75 g portion provides approximately 120 kcal: 75 × 160 ÷ 100. A smaller 37.5 g portion gives 60 kcal, while 112.5 g gives 180 kcal. These are calculated amounts of the named food, not claims about the weight of a standard piece, cup or restaurant serving.

Avocado is often used in small quantities as a spread, but the edible amount can vary greatly between a thin smear and a generously filled toast. The skin and stone make whole-fruit weight particularly misleading.

Compare complete dishes, not isolated ingredients

For avocado toast, weigh the flesh on its own before spreading it. When making guacamole, include the complete batch ingredients, then measure the share eaten rather than assigning every spoonful the same size.

A half avocado is a fraction of a particular fruit, not a universal gram amount. Two halves from different fruit can have different calories even when their appearance is similar in a photograph.

For an explicit ingredient example, 75 g of the named avocado plus 5 g olive oil gives approximately 164.2 kcal. The avocado contributes 120 kcal and the oil contributes 44.2 kcal. This is an illustrative two-ingredient calculation, not a tested recipe or a claim that avocado is always served with oil.

A practical side-by-side review

Write down the edible grams of avocado in one version and of cucumber in the alternative. Include any accompanying foods that change between versions. A swap that uses different amounts of bread, dressing or topping will not have the same calorie difference as the equal-weight food comparison. Keeping the ingredients visible explains the result.

In BiteCal, start with a photo of the avocado portion and the rest of the meal. Review the proposed food name, preparation, amount and visible additions before saving the calorie and macro estimate. If you already know the gram weight, use it as a check rather than accepting a visually plausible portion. A photo cannot establish a hidden oil quantity or replace the identity of a packaged product.

The nutrient figures come from USDA SR Legacy, final release April 2018. They provide a reproducible reference for the named food rather than a laboratory result for your own serving. Use the current package or restaurant information when it describes your exact product more closely. Rounding explains small differences between displayed portions; calculations here use the retained unrounded reference values.

الأسئلة الشائعة

Which reference has fewer calories per 100 g?

For these records, cucumber has the lower value: 15 versus 160 kcal per 100 g. The comparison applies to the named preparations.

Does equal weight mean the same serving?

No. The equal 75 g example isolates food weight; the amounts you actually eat may differ. Calculate the portions planned for each dish.

How much protein does avocado contain?

The named reference supplies 2 g per 100 g, or 1.5 g in the worked 75 g portion. Protein grams describe a nutrient rather than total food weight.

Should I choose only from the lower calorie number?

Consider the rest of the meal, portion, preparation and nutrient profile. A half avocado is a fraction of a particular fruit, not a universal gram amount. Two halves from different fruit can have different calories even when their appearance is similar in a photograph.
