How Long Does It Take to Burn 500 Calories?
·
Time to expend 500 kcal depends on body mass, activity intensity and whether you mean gross or additional energy above rest. A fixed duration for everyone would hide those assumptions.
A practical example
| Check | How to apply it |
|---|---|
| Assumed mass and intensity | 70 kg, hypothetical 5 MET |
| 500 gross kcal | About 82 minutes |
| 500 kcal above rest | About 102 minutes under this model |
Work through a clearly labelled example
At a hypothetical 5 MET and 70 kg, gross energy is 5 × 3.5 × 70 ÷ 200 = 6.125 kcal/min. Dividing 500 by 6.125 gives about 82 minutes. This does not identify the intensity of your actual activity.
For energy above rest, using MET minus 1 gives 4.9 kcal/min and roughly 102 minutes for 500 additional kcal under the same simplified assumptions.
Do not use exercise as a meal repayment system
A food log and an activity record can inform a routine without making every meal something to burn off. BiteCal supports convenient meal recording; sustainable activity also has purposes beyond a calorie total. Increase activity according to ability and recovery.
