How to Measure Food Calories at Home

·

At home, estimate food calories from a matching nutrition reference and the amount eaten. Use ingredient labels for recipes, weigh portions when useful and include cooking fats. This is intake estimation, not a laboratory measurement of the meal.

A practical example

CheckHow to apply it
Label basis150 kcal per 30 g
Portion eaten45 g = 1.5 label servings
Calculated energy150 × 1.5 = 225 kcal

Choose the right basis before doing the maths

A product label might give calories per 30 g, while a food database uses 100 g. If the label says 150 kcal per 30 g and you eat 45 g, the estimate is 225 kcal.

Raw and cooked versions need separate matching. A cooked pot has a different weight after water is added or lost; that does not justify switching the nutrition entry mid-calculation.

Account for what actually reaches the plate

For a shared recipe, sum the ingredients and divide by the portion basis you use. Record leftovers or unused sauces consistently rather than treating all purchased ingredients as eaten. BiteCal can reduce entry effort with a meal photo, but hidden ingredients remain something to review.
