How many calories does rice contain?

For the numbers in this guide, rice means “Rice, white, long-grain, regular, enriched, cooked” (USDA FoodData Central 168878). It contains 130 kcal per 100 g edible portion. The reference is cooked enriched long-grain white rice. Dry rice absorbs water, so the same gram amount of dry and cooked rice is not interchangeable. Keeping that definition attached to the number prevents a plain ingredient from being mistaken for a prepared meal.

A weighed 180 g portion provides approximately 234 kcal: 180 × 130 ÷ 100. A smaller 90 g portion gives 117 kcal, while 270 g gives 351 kcal. These are calculated amounts of the named food, not claims about the weight of a standard piece, cup or restaurant serving.

What comes with those calories?

The same 100 g reference provides 2.7 g protein, 28.2 g total carbohydrate, 0.3 g fat and 0.4 g fiber. For the illustrated 180 g portion, those amounts become 4.8 g protein, 50.8 g carbohydrate, 0.5 g fat and 0.7 g fiber. Calories and individual nutrients describe different parts of the food, so keep all of them on the same portion basis when reading the table.

A cooked rice weight includes absorbed water. This is why a bowl of cooked rice cannot be entered using the same gram amount of dry rice, even when both came from the same bag.

Weighing rice without guessing a serving

Weigh rice in the state named by the entry. For a batch, weigh the cooked total and the amount actually served. A useful kitchen sequence is to place an empty bowl on the scale, tare it to zero, add the edible rice, and note the grams before combining it with other foods. If you serve only part of that amount, record the part eaten. Leftovers matter because the amount available and the amount consumed are different quantities.

For a pot shared by several people, weigh the cooked rice and the portion served. If you instead calculate from the dry ingredients, divide that recipe total using the actual cooked yield.

What changes in a complete dish?

White rice, brown rice, sushi rice and fried rice describe different food entries. Fried rice also includes cooking fat and other ingredients; a bowl shape or scoop size does not establish a standard weight.

Fried rice includes oil and other ingredients. Rice cooked in broth may also have a different sodium profile.

For an explicit ingredient example, 180 g of the named rice plus 5 g olive oil gives approximately 278.2 kcal. The rice contributes 234 kcal and the oil contributes 44.2 kcal. This is an illustrative two-ingredient calculation, not a tested recipe or a claim that rice is always served with oil.

How rice compares with cooked quinoa

The comparison food is “Quinoa, cooked” (FDC 168917), which contains 120 kcal per 100 g. At equal 180 g weights, the rice reference supplies 234 kcal and cooked quinoa supplies 216 kcal: a difference of 18 kcal. That is a calculation for these records, not a universal ranking of foods or an instruction to exchange equal portions.

Compare the nutrients as well as the energy in the named records below. A food with a different water content, texture or role in the meal may not be a direct substitute. For a real swap, compare the amounts you plan to eat and include the rest of the plate, rather than choosing solely from the lower number in a 100 g table.

Recording the meal in BiteCal

In BiteCal, start with a photo of the rice portion and the rest of the meal. Review the proposed food name, preparation, amount and visible additions before saving the calorie and macro estimate. If you already know the gram weight, use it as a check rather than accepting a visually plausible portion. A photo cannot establish a hidden oil quantity or replace the identity of a packaged product.

The nutrient figures come from USDA SR Legacy, final release April 2018. They provide a reproducible reference for the named food rather than a laboratory result for your own serving. Use the current package or restaurant information when it describes your exact product more closely. Rounding explains small differences between displayed portions; calculations here use the retained unrounded reference values.

자주 묻는 질문

How many calories are in 180 g of rice?

Approximately 234 kcal for the named rice, white, long-grain, regular, enriched, cooked reference. Multiply its 130 kcal per 100 g by 180/100; additions are separate.

Does one rice serving always have that calorie count?

No. The number depends on edible weight and preparation. A cooked rice weight includes absorbed water. This is why a bowl of cooked rice cannot be entered using the same gram amount of dry rice, even when both came from the same bag.

What changes the estimate most for this food?

Fried rice includes oil and other ingredients. Rice cooked in broth may also have a different sodium profile.

Can BiteCal estimate rice calories from a photo?

BiteCal offers photo-based calorie and macro estimates. Review the suggested rice entry and serving, including ingredients that the picture cannot show clearly.
