Walking Calorie Calculator Guide: Time, Speed, Body Weight and Incline
BiteCal editorial · · อ่านประมาณ 2 นาที
Walking calories depend on body weight, time, speed and terrain. A MET-based estimate is kcal ≈ MET × 3.5 × body weight in kg ÷ 200 × minutes. It estimates total energy during the activity; subtracting resting energy gives a different, active-only estimate. No single calories-per-step number fits every walk.
Activity calorie estimator
Try the example, then change the assumptions to explore your own estimate.
Illustrative example result
- Total energy estimate
- 110.3 kcal
- Above-rest estimate
- 73.5 kcal
MET model estimate, not measured personal expenditure. Total includes resting energy; above-rest subtracts it. Choose a MET value matching the actual activity.

Worked walking-energy examples: 30 minutes
| Illustrative activity assumption | Body weight | Total kcal estimate | Active-only kcal estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.0 MET | 60 kg | 95 | 63 |
| 3.0 MET | 70 kg | 110 | 74 |
| 4.0 MET | 70 kg | 147 | 110 |
| 4.0 MET | 80 kg | 168 | 126 |
How does a walking calorie calculation work?
A MET describes an activity's energy cost relative to a standardized resting level. Choose a value for the actual pace and terrain from the Adult Compendium, then enter body weight and minutes. The example table uses hypothetical 3.0 and 4.0 MET activities to show the arithmetic; it does not assign either value to every walker.
For 70 kg and 30 minutes at 3.0 MET, the calculation is 3 × 3.5 × 70 ÷ 200 × 30 = 110.25 kcal. The active-only version uses MET minus 1, giving 73.5 kcal. Rounding these estimates is more sensible than treating the decimal places as measured accuracy.
Treadmill and outdoor walking are not identical
Incline, speed, uneven ground and carrying a load can change effort. A treadmill display also needs your actual weight to personalize its estimate. Holding the handrails or entering the wrong units can make a displayed number a poor match to the walk performed.
Steps alone omit duration, stride length and terrain. If a watch and treadmill disagree, first compare total versus active energy and the recorded time and weight. Their estimates are not independent measurements of exactly the same quantity.
Use walking estimates without double counting
An activity-adjusted TDEE estimate already includes movement. Adding every walk's full displayed calories to that estimate can count the same activity twice. Keep activity and food records consistent and assess longer-term patterns rather than using one walk as an automatic food allowance.
For the food side, try BiteCal's convenient photo-led diary. Paid AI scanning starts an editable meal estimate, while the daily overview and white bear make it easier to return to your calorie-and-macro record. Free features are available. This does not imply that BiteCal measures walking energy or imports a treadmill automatically.

คำถามที่พบบ่อย
How many calories do 10,000 steps burn?
There is no universal amount. Weight, stride, pace, duration and terrain matter. A steps estimate should state those assumptions rather than presenting a fixed number as measured expenditure.
Does walking uphill always equal the treadmill display?
No. The display estimates energy using its inputs and algorithm. Check grade, actual duration, weight and whether handrails changed the effort, and treat the result as an estimate.
