How Are Calories in Food Measured?
·
Food energy can be studied in a laboratory, while nutrition labels and databases report values using established calculation and measurement methods. A kitchen scale measures food mass; a phone photo estimates visible food and portions. These are different levels of evidence.
A practical example
| Check | How to apply it |
|---|---|
| Laboratory | Measures properties under controlled conditions |
| Label or database | Reports a defined reference and serving |
| Photo or kitchen scale | Estimates appearance or measures mass; does not directly measure energy |
Understand the estimate behind a diary entry
A label may calculate energy using nutrient composition and conversion factors. The familiar 4 kcal/g protein, 4 carbohydrate and 9 fat approximation is useful for checking arithmetic, but fibre, other components and rounding can make simple sums differ.
A household food scale does not burn the food or directly measure its usable energy.
Choose the closest reference
For a packaged product, use its actual label and serving size. For a recipe, total matched ingredients and divide by your portion basis. BiteCal’s photo workflow offers a convenient starting estimate, with visible foods and portions needing review before saving.
