Running Calorie Calculator Guide: Distance, Time and Body Weight
·
Running a mile does not burn one universal amount. Using the Adult Compendium reference of 8.5 MET for running at 5.0–5.2 mph, a 70 kg person completing a twelve-minute mile has an illustrative estimate of about 125 total kcal or 110 above-rest kcal. Body mass, terrain and the reference chosen affect the result.

Illustrative example result
- Total energy estimate
- 124.9 kcal
- Above-rest estimate
- 110.3 kcal
MET model estimate, not measured personal expenditure. Total includes resting energy; above-rest subtracts it. Choose a MET value matching the actual activity.

One twelve-minute mile at the stated 8.5-MET reference
| Body weight | Total kcal estimate | Above-rest kcal estimate |
|---|---|---|
| 60 kg | 107 | 95 |
| 70 kg | 125 | 110 |
| 80 kg | 143 | 126 |
Match distance, pace and duration
At 5 mph, one mile takes twelve minutes. That connects the distance to the duration used in this example. If a calculator changes pace or incline, check that it also changes the appropriate duration or intensity assumption rather than keeping an unrelated fixed calorie value.
A mile and a kilometer are different distances. Confirm the unit before comparing two calculators, and check whether one result is total energy while the other is active-only energy.
Calculate the stated run
For the 70 kg, twelve-minute, 8.5-MET example: 8.5 × 3.5 × 70 ÷ 200 × 12 = 124.95 total kcal. Using 7.5 MET after subtracting standardized rest gives 110.25 above-rest kcal. The rounded table shows how body weight changes the same calculation.
This is a population-category estimate. Wind, grade, running economy and the actual activity can change how well the reference represents the run. More displayed decimal places do not turn it into an individual measurement.
Use the result without making food a repayment
If your daily expenditure target already includes running, adding the same run again can double count activity. Review the overall eating and training pattern instead of treating a watch or calculator number as an exact amount to eat back.

Frequently asked questions
Does running faster always burn proportionally more per mile?
A higher pace changes duration as well as activity intensity. Compare a calculation using both appropriate inputs rather than multiplying the old result by a speed ratio.
Can I use this table for a hilly run?
It does not include a specific grade adjustment. Choose a relevant reference or model for the actual terrain and keep the estimate’s limits visible.
