How Many Calories Do Sit-Ups Burn? A Worked Estimate With Clear Limits
·
Sit-up calories cannot be reliably calculated from repetitions alone. For an illustrative 70 kg person, ten minutes in a 3.8-MET moderate-calisthenics category gives about 47 total kcal or 34 above-rest kcal. It is a timed category estimate, not a fixed calorie value for each sit-up or a guarantee of belly-fat loss.

Illustrative example result
- Total energy estimate
- 46.6 kcal
- Above-rest estimate
- 34.3 kcal
MET model estimate, not measured personal expenditure. Total includes resting energy; above-rest subtracts it. Choose a MET value matching the actual activity.

Sit-up category example: 70 kg at 3.8 MET
| Assumed activity time | Total kcal estimate | Above-rest kcal estimate |
|---|---|---|
| 3 minutes | 14 | 10 |
| 5 minutes | 23 | 17 |
| 10 minutes | 47 | 34 |
Start with time and the actual session
A short abdominal set with breaks is not the same as continuous activity for the full session. Record how long the movement lasted and how much recovery occurred. Speed, range of motion, body mass and effort are missing from a simple repetition count.
Avoid scaling an online value for 100 repetitions to a much larger number while leaving the assumptions unstated. The calorie estimate becomes less meaningful when the described activity no longer matches the session.
A transparent sit-up calculation
The moderate-calisthenics category used here includes sit-ups and is listed at 3.8 MET in the Adult Compendium. At 70 kg, kcal per minute is approximately 3.8 × 3.5 × 70 ÷ 200 = 4.655. The table varies time only to show the arithmetic.
Subtracting one resting MET estimates energy above standardized rest. Neither calculation measures a particular person or proves that one abdominal routine has a particular weight-loss effect.
Do not confuse abdominal exercise with a fat-loss promise
A calorie calculation does not tell you where body fat will change. Choose exercise according to appropriate training goals and technique, rather than treating a sore abdomen or a large repetition count as evidence of targeted fat loss.

Frequently asked questions
Does doing more sit-ups guarantee belly-fat loss?
No. A repetition or calorie estimate does not establish targeted fat loss or a guaranteed body-composition outcome.
Can I count the whole time between my first and last set as exercise?
Not at one continuous-activity intensity if much of that time was rest. Describe work and recovery rather than silently treating them as identical.
