Calories for Muscle Gain: Start with Maintenance
·
To plan muscle gain, estimate maintenance intake before adding a modest surplus scenario. There is no fixed calorie intake that guarantees muscle growth; training, protein, recovery and actual progress all matter.
A practical example
| Check | How to apply it |
|---|---|
| Maintenance example | 2,400 kcal/day |
| 10% scenario | 240 kcal/day extra |
| Example total | 2,640 kcal/day |
Use a transparent surplus example
If maintenance is estimated at 2,400 kcal, a 10% surplus scenario is 2,640 kcal. The added 240 kcal is a chosen planning assumption, not proof that it is optimal.
Record training and a consistent weight trend so you can evaluate the scenario. More rapid weight gain is not automatically more rapid muscle gain.
Keep protein and food coverage visible
Use the protein calculator to turn a grams-per-kilogram assumption into a daily number. BiteCal can help record ordinary meals through reviewable photo estimates. If your weight trend or training response differs from the plan, reassess the assumptions instead of endlessly adding calories.
