How to Calculate Calories from Fat

·

Multiply fat grams by 9 to estimate calories contributed by fat. To find the percentage of energy from fat, divide that result by total calories and multiply by 100. Keep serving sizes matched throughout.

A practical example

CheckHow to apply it
Fat grams12 g
Fat energy12 × 9 = 108 kcal
Share of 250 kcal108 ÷ 250 = 43.2%

Follow one serving through the calculation

If a serving contains 12 g fat and 250 kcal total, fat contributes about 108 kcal. The percentage is 108 ÷ 250 × 100 = 43.2%. That percentage describes energy, not the percentage of the food’s physical weight.

Eating two servings doubles both fat grams and total calories; it does not double the percentage.

Understand small differences from label arithmetic

Nutrition panels use rounded values and can include components that complicate simple 4/4/9 sums. Use the labelled total calories for the product rather than claiming the label is wrong because your calculation differs slightly. BiteCal lets the numbers become part of a daily food record rather than a standalone calculation.
