How to Count Calories When Cooking a Shared Recipe

·

Add the nutrition of the ingredients actually used, then divide by servings or by the final cooked weight. The key is keeping the portion basis consistent, especially when cooking changes the amount of water in the dish.

A practical example

CheckHow to apply it
Batch energy1,800 kcal
Cooked edible weight1,200 g
300 g portion1,800 ÷ 1,200 × 300 = 450 kcal

Use a batch calculation

Suppose the ingredients used total 1,800 kcal and the finished edible dish weighs 1,200 g. The batch has 1.5 kcal/g; a 300 g portion is about 450 kcal. These are hypothetical numbers, not a reference value for any named recipe.

If you divide into four equal servings instead, each is also 450 kcal. Unequal portions need their own weight or a clearly stated estimate.

Handle oil and discarded ingredients consistently

Include oil added to the recipe and adjust only when you have a reasonable basis for what was not eaten. Do not mix raw ingredient calories with an unrelated prepared-dish entry. BiteCal can start a diary entry from a photo, but your own recipe calculation can provide the portion reference.
