What Is a Calorie Deficit? A Simple Example and Checklist

我们如何引用与核对信息

A calorie deficit means taking in less energy than your body uses over time. For example, estimated use of 2,400 calories and intake of 2,100 gives a 300-calorie deficit. This is arithmetic, not a personal intake prescription.

What a calorie deficit looks like

ExampleEnergy usedEnergy eatenDifference
Deficit2,4002,100300 below
Maintenance2,4002,400No difference
Surplus2,4002,600200 above

Calculate the difference, not a universal target

Daily energy use includes resting needs, movement and digestion. TDEE estimates total daily needs; BMR estimates resting energy. Your actual use can differ from a calculator result.

Why the scale does not follow the equation every day

Water, digestion and other short-term changes can hide changes in body fat. The body also adapts over time. Review trends over several weeks rather than converting every daily deficit into a guaranteed amount of weight loss.

Which number are you looking at?

TermMeaningHow to use it
BMREstimated resting energyNot your complete daily food budget
TDEEEstimated total daily energy useA starting point, not a measurement
Food intakeEnergy from food and drinksCount portions, oils, sauces and drinks
Weight trendRepeated measurements over timeConsider water and normal fluctuations

Build a routine you can repeat

Record normal meals, include drinks and cooking additions, and review hunger, energy and activity. A deficit should not mean ignoring persistent fatigue or dizziness; seek qualified advice if these occur.

Before cutting more food, check these

常见问题

Is a 500-calorie deficit right for everyone?

No. Appropriate intake depends on the person, health, activity and goals. Do not subtract a fixed amount from BMR and assume it is safe.

Can I be in a deficit without exercising?

A deficit describes the energy balance, not one particular workout. Activity still supports health and contributes to daily energy use.

Why am I not losing weight in a deficit?

Your true intake or energy use may differ from estimates, and short-term water changes can affect weight. Review the record and trend before assuming the calorie estimate is exact.
