Do Resting Calories Count Toward a Calorie Deficit?

·

Resting energy is already part of total daily energy expenditure. A deficit compares total intake with total expenditure; you should not add resting calories a second time to a maintenance estimate that already includes them.

A practical example

CheckHow to apply it
Total expenditure2,200 kcal in this example
Intake2,000 kcal in this example
Deficit2,200 − 2,000 = 200 kcal

Draw the energy boundary first

If total daily expenditure is estimated at 2,200 kcal and intake is 2,000 kcal, the example deficit is 200 kcal. Adding another 1,500 resting calories to the same 2,200 would double-count part of expenditure.

Wearables and apps may display resting, active and total energy separately. Read their definitions before combining numbers.

Keep the same convention across tools

A TDEE calculator based on an activity factor already makes an allowance for activity. Treat a separately recorded workout cautiously rather than automatically eating back every reported calorie. BiteCal can hold food and activity records together; your interpretation still needs a consistent counting rule.
