Do Protein Shakes Break an Intermittent Fast?
·
A protein shake contains energy and breaks a zero-calorie fast. You can place it inside your eating window if it helps meet your protein needs. Medical or test-related fasting follows your clinician’s instructions rather than diet-app rules.
A practical example
| Check | How to apply it |
|---|---|
| Powder | Read the actual scoop size |
| Mixer | Water, milk and plant drinks differ |
| Timing | Choose an eating-window time that fits your routine |
Distinguish an eating window from a nutrition target
A label showing 25 g protein already represents roughly 100 kcal from protein alone, before milk, sugar or fat. Water does not remove those calories. If your plan is a calorie-free fasting interval, schedule the shake after it ends.
If your main goal is meeting protein needs, the entire day matters more than making a drink fit a special definition of fasting.

Count the powder and mixer separately. A serving of powder mixed with water differs from the same scoop blended with milk, fruit and nut butter. In BiteCal, review what the photo estimate includes; a picture cannot reveal a hidden scoop of powder.
