Lentil versus cooked chickpea: calories, macros and portion trade-offs
BiteCal 編輯團隊 · · 閱讀約 4 分鐘
The named lentil and cooked chickpea references contain 116 and 164 kcal per 100 g respectively. Compare equal weights first, then calculate the portions and additions you would actually eat.
Named foods on the same 100 g basis
| USDA reference | kcal | Protein | Carbohydrate | Fat | Fiber |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lentils, mature seeds, cooked, boiled, without salt | 116 kcal | 9 g | 20.1 g | 0.4 g | 7.9 g |
| Chickpeas (garbanzo beans, bengal gram), mature seeds, cooked, boiled, without salt | 164 kcal | 8.9 g | 27.4 g | 2.6 g | 7.6 g |
What exactly is being compared?
For the numbers in this guide, lentil means “Lentils, mature seeds, cooked, boiled, without salt” (USDA FoodData Central 172421). It contains 116 kcal per 100 g edible portion. The selected lentils are boiled without salt. Dry lentils, lentil soup and prepared lentil patties are different foods. Keeping that definition attached to the number prevents a plain ingredient from being mistaken for a prepared meal.
The second food is “Chickpeas (garbanzo beans, bengal gram), mature seeds, cooked, boiled, without salt,” rather than an unspecified cooked chickpea dish. Preparation is part of the comparison: a raw ingredient, cooked grain, spread or complete meal is not automatically interchangeable with another food just because both appear in a calorie search.
Calories on an equal-weight basis
The comparison food is “Chickpeas (garbanzo beans, bengal gram), mature seeds, cooked, boiled, without salt” (FDC 173757), which contains 164 kcal per 100 g. At equal 150 g weights, the lentil reference supplies 174 kcal and cooked chickpea supplies 246 kcal: a difference of 72 kcal. That is a calculation for these records, not a universal ranking of foods or an instruction to exchange equal portions.
The gap per 100 g is 48 kcal. Doubling both weighed amounts doubles that calculated gap; halving both halves it. This explains the table without claiming that either food has a fixed portion or that a lower-energy choice provides an identical eating experience.
Lentil calories for weighed edible portions
| Edible amount | Calculated calories | Protein | Carbohydrate | Fat | Fiber |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 75 g | 87 kcal | 6.8 g | 15.1 g | 0.3 g | 5.9 g |
| 100 g | 116 kcal | 9 g | 20.1 g | 0.4 g | 7.9 g |
| 150 g | 174 kcal | 13.5 g | 30.1 g | 0.6 g | 11.8 g |
| 225 g | 261 kcal | 20.3 g | 45.2 g | 0.9 g | 17.8 g |
| 300 g | 348 kcal | 27.1 g | 60.3 g | 1.1 g | 23.7 g |
Protein, carbohydrate, fat and fiber
The same 100 g reference provides 9 g protein, 20.1 g total carbohydrate, 0.4 g fat and 7.9 g fiber. For the illustrated 150 g portion, those amounts become 13.5 g protein, 30.1 g carbohydrate, 0.6 g fat and 11.8 g fiber. Calories and individual nutrients describe different parts of the food, so keep all of them on the same portion basis when reading the table.
For cooked chickpea, the same 100 g record reports 8.9 g protein, 27.4 g carbohydrate, 2.6 g fat, 7.6 g fiber. Read those values as a profile rather than a single score. The combination you want depends on the rest of the meal and any personal nutrition requirements.
Why the realistic portion matters
A weighed 150 g portion provides approximately 174 kcal: 150 × 116 ÷ 100. A smaller 75 g portion gives 87 kcal, while 225 g gives 261 kcal. These are calculated amounts of the named food, not claims about the weight of a standard piece, cup or restaurant serving.
The selected lentils are boiled without salt. Dry lentils absorb water during cooking, so a dry ingredient weight is not interchangeable with the same gram amount of cooked lentils.
Compare complete dishes, not isolated ingredients
A lentil salad can be recorded from drained cooked lentils and its other ingredients. Lentil soup needs its complete batch yield, particularly when much of the bowl is broth rather than lentils.
A lentil patty may contain oil, breadcrumbs or other binders. Count those ingredients as part of the recipe instead of treating the cooked patty weight as plain boiled lentil weight.
For an explicit ingredient example, 150 g of the named lentil plus 5 g olive oil gives approximately 218.2 kcal. The lentil contributes 174 kcal and the oil contributes 44.2 kcal. This is an illustrative two-ingredient calculation, not a tested recipe or a claim that lentil is always served with oil.
A practical side-by-side review
Write down the edible grams of lentil in one version and of cooked chickpea in the alternative. Include any accompanying foods that change between versions. A swap that uses different amounts of bread, dressing or topping will not have the same calorie difference as the equal-weight food comparison. Keeping the ingredients visible explains the result.
In BiteCal, start with a photo of the lentil portion and the rest of the meal. Review the proposed food name, preparation, amount and visible additions before saving the calorie and macro estimate. If you already know the gram weight, use it as a check rather than accepting a visually plausible portion. A photo cannot establish a hidden oil quantity or replace the identity of a packaged product.
The nutrient figures come from USDA SR Legacy, final release April 2018. They provide a reproducible reference for the named food rather than a laboratory result for your own serving. Use the current package or restaurant information when it describes your exact product more closely. Rounding explains small differences between displayed portions; calculations here use the retained unrounded reference values.
常見問題
Which reference has fewer calories per 100 g?
For these records, lentil has the lower value: 116 versus 164 kcal per 100 g. The comparison applies to the named preparations.
Does equal weight mean the same serving?
No. The equal 150 g example isolates food weight; the amounts you actually eat may differ. Calculate the portions planned for each dish.
How much protein does lentil contain?
The named reference supplies 9 g per 100 g, or 13.5 g in the worked 150 g portion. Protein grams describe a nutrient rather than total food weight.
Should I choose only from the lower calorie number?
Consider the rest of the meal, portion, preparation and nutrient profile. A lentil patty may contain oil, breadcrumbs or other binders. Count those ingredients as part of the recipe instead of treating the cooked patty weight as plain boiled lentil weight.
