How to Use a Kitchen Scale for Food and Calories: Tare, Weigh, Match

·

Tare the container, weigh the edible food and match the entry to its preparation state. A scale measures mass, not calories; the calorie result comes from the label or nutrition reference you apply to that mass.

A kitchen scale measures grams, not calories

Place the scale on a stable surface, choose the correct unit, place an empty container and tare to zero. Add the edible food and record its mass. Match that amount to the product label or a suitable raw, cooked or drained reference. A milliliter setting should not be treated as a universal gram conversion for every liquid.

For a batch, record ingredient quantities and the final edible yield. Divide the finished batch according to the amount actually served, not an assumed equal spoonful. A scale is especially useful for oil, nut butter and other calorie-dense additions. BiteCal’s paid photo scan can start the diary entry; use the weighed amount to review the portion before saving.

Calculate a weighed portion correctly

If a reference lists 120 kcal per 100 g and the edible portion weighs 150 g, calculate 120 × 150 ÷ 100 = 180 kcal. Keep the units visible so “one serving” is not confused with 100 g.

Weigh meat, rice or pasta in the same state as the chosen reference. Cooking can change water content without creating or removing the same proportion of food energy.

Use the scale where it improves the estimate most

Oil, spreads and mixed recipes can be difficult to judge by eye. For a plate already prepared, a BiteCal photo can help start the entry, while a label and measured ingredients can improve the portion basis. Bones, peel and leftovers need attention if the reference describes edible weight.
